Death…is a wretched thing. When we’re faced with it it makes us sick, sick to our
very cores. It affects us unlike any other human experience. But why? I’ve always been of the opinion (having dealt with very little death in my life) that, “Everyone’s gotta die sometime.” “We all die.” “Better that way than another way…”
But when you actually meet death, when it’s just occurred, something inside tells us that it’s just plain wrong.
So here’s my thoughts:
1) When we come face to face with death, we should realise just how horrid sin is, it should drive us to hate sin more and more. The truth is we don’t really mind sin, in fact if it’s the right sin we kind of like it. But death is a consequence of sin. (Genesis 2:17, Romans 6:23 to name but a few). And if death feels so wrong, so grotesque, so sickly to us, such a thing that we hate it and try and avoid it at all cost…then surely that’s how we should feel about it’s cause, it’s roots. Every death we experience should lead us to hate sin more and more.
2) It’s in our death that we actually see Christ’s greatest victory. Death, formerly, was the greatest punishment possible, there was nothing more that could be done to you, it was the great punishment. But Christ came and conquered death. On the Cross he defeated sin, and on the Sunday he defeated death. We still die, but now, for those who believe on Him who has power, death is our final cleansing. We get rid of these awful, sinful shells and receive new bodies, free from the ravages of sin. We are made perfect and get to live in God’s perfect world. Every death we experience (at least those of brothers and sisters) should lead us to praise praise Christ and thank him that his work is complete.
Death sucks, but Christ HAS removed it’s sting. Death makes us want to vomit, but when we die we’ll want to sing!
Any thoughts?
True for most people death sucks. For us it is gain. (Phil 1: 21)… Now you will prob argue that Paul was talking about Heaven – what death brings those who are united to Christ by faith. Yet isnt he also saying, in line with Phil 3: 8 etc) that death is gain because it presents another opportunity to know Christ on the earth and to witness to Him. (ie before one dies..) Death itself is the final step towards the One whom has loved us from the start. Hallelujah, even if the step “sucks”..
what do you think?
You are, of course, correct. I did allude to this in my final paragraph though Lazarus, when I said, “but when we die we’ll want to sing!”
But still, you’re correct…
yeh sorry wasnt trying to negate what u said necessarily just thinking out loud as it were… ps i am your father.
